Created in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association, the World Veterinary Day is an annual celebration which praises and promotes the veterinary profession. This day is celebrated in order to highlight the importance of veterinarians all over the world.
World Veterinary Day is celebrated on the last Saturday of April every year. Each year there is a different theme. Both, the WVA and World Organization for Animal Health, select a theme which is meant to raise awareness among people and pet owners of the importance of animal care.
Last year, the celebration took place on April 28 and the whole veterinary community celebrated this day. The theme of last year was all about bringing attention to important roles vets have, it was titled as “The role of the veterinary profession in sustainable development to improve livelihoods, food security, and safety.”

In 2017, the World Veterinary Day was on April 29. Last year’s theme was “Antimicrobial Resistance—From Awareness to Action.” So, the 2017 World Veterinary Day Award went to The National Council of the Order of Veterinarians of France. They won the award thanks to their contributions as France aims to eliminate the risks of antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine.
In 2016, the World Veterinary Day fell on 30th April, and the theme was “Continuing Education with a One Health focus. “
This year, the World Veterinary Day is falling on 27th April, but the theme has not been published yet. However, it is expected to be announced soon on the WVA website.
During the World Veterinary Day, various vet initiatives take place all over the world. Each of the initiatives aims to raise the awareness of the role veterinarians play while fighting for a much more sustainable future. Moreover, there are plenty of activities which are organized on this day in order to celebrate it. Hence, animal lovers and vets take part in different seminars, events, and activities in veterinary schools and hospitals.
Moreover, the WVA and OIE give the World Veterinary Day Award on the World Veterinary Day to a member association which works alone or in collaboration with other veterinary groups. It is given to a member who has provided the most successful contribution to the selected annual theme.
